“Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience.”
George Washington, “Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation,” Rule #110, 1744
God planted a conscience within the human heart as a touchstone to eternity. We know from scripture that serving a right conscience brings happiness and blessing and that choosing sin against conscience brings despair. Therefore, the gift of conscience is our property to inform and refine by seeking instruction in the Word of God and conforming our thought and action to Christ.
Teach the children to care for their consciences by…
- Continuing to learn from the Word of God
- Consulting conscience in thought and action
- Repenting of wrong thinking and action and choosing right over wrong
Timothy, my child, I entrust you with this command in keeping with the previous prophecies about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby shipwrecked their faith.
I Timothy 1:18-19
