Jo drew out a crimson-colored book from under her pillow. She knew it very well…that beautiful old story of the best life ever lived…and a true guidebook for any pilgrim on a long journey.
“A Merry Christmas,” Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
The beloved American literature classic Little Women teaches the importance of home as the seedbed of our liberty. In each chapter, we learn with the March family the privilege of a Godly, loving, and well-regulated home as the center of moral and Biblical instruction.
As the story begins, the March sisters prepare for a bleak Christmas. There is no money for presents, and Father March is away from home serving as a chaplain while the Civil War rages. Marmee (Mother March) gently reminds the girls that material desires are fleeting, but eternal values like faith, love, and serving others allow us to shed our vanities and selfishness. She reminded her children that “the longing for goodness and happiness is the guide that leads us through many troubles and mistakes…”
TEACH THE CHILDREN
- The Christian home is “the nursery of the soul.” Family prayer and Bible study are central to the nurturing of the soul.
- Christian character, usefulness, and happiness depend on the habits learned at home.
- Liberty passes from one generation to the next—the home forms the future citizen that develops America’s civil and political character.
Our children must be competent handlers of language at all levels. The Language Mastery Series teaches the essential skills of grammar, speaking, and writing needed to maintain our heritage of liberty and self-government and restore our Biblical constitutional Republic that protects this heritage.
