“We profess to be republicans, and yet we neglect the only means of establishing and perpetuating our republican forms of government; that is, the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity by means of the Bible; for this divine book, above all others, favors that equality among mankind, that respect for just laws, and all those sober and frugal virtues which constitute the soul of republicanism.”
Benjamin Rush, Signer of the Declaration of Independence (American Tract Society, c.1830)
From the creation of mankind, there has existed a dynamic tension between liberty and law. God instituted civil government to set the boundaries of these two forces. The story of man’s inexorable march toward liberty for the individual has been largely marked by tyranny and setbacks. The founding of the American Republic heralded the greatest degree of liberty for the individual this world has ever known. What role did Christianity play in the founding of our Republic? Will America succumb to the generational vagaries that have destroyed other civilizations, or will there be another “new birth of freedom” before it is too late? We have the answer!
Teach the Children
- Godly government is good and was instituted to protect the liberty of individuals who obey God’s laws.
- America was founded upon a republican form of government based upon the Biblical principles of Christianity.
- Every generation of Americans must do their part to preserve the gift of liberty God has given.
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (II Corinthians 3:17)
