“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:15 ESV
Themes of regeneration appear throughout classic literature. The word “regeneration” means “to make something new.” Titus explains “regeneration” as the “renewal of the Holy Spirit.”
The Secret Garden, a time-tested and beloved children’s classic, carries the theme of regeneration throughout the whole story. Mary and Colin, the main characters, are two very self-centered and unhealthy children who are transformed by working in the secret garden. As the seemingly “dead” garden comes to life in spring, so do Mary and Colin regenerate their “dead” hearts and minds to new life. Reading this classic aloud with your children gives parents an opportunity to teach how we are “regenerated” through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us. It changes our hearts and give us new purpose in our lives.
Teach the Children:
- God’s principle of individuality: God is the Center of all things and informs all things. He maintains the identity and individuality of everything which He created.
- Christian character: Practicing diligence, industry, love for others, and standing firm in your faith.
- God prunes and cultivates our hearts for His purposes: …and every branch in me that does not bear fruit he prunes that I may bear more fruit. John 15:2
