“There must be natural paths through the seas–the best routes for man to travel.”
Commander Matthew Maury, Trailblazer of the Seas, children’s biography of Matthew Maury by Jean Lee Latham
Sailing the seas depends upon knowledge of sea currents – the pathways in the sea. Who discovered the sea currents?
Commander Matthew Maury (1806-1873) was an American mathematician, navigator, astronomer, and professor from Virginia. He is called the “Father of Oceanography” for his global research mapping ocean currents, winds, atmospheric pressure, the water cycle, the Gulf Stream, and other scientific endeavors related to oceans. His life demonstrates the American Spirit in an age of invention and enterprise.
Also known as “Pathfinder of the Seas,” Commander Maury uncovered and mapped subsurface ocean currents with regular circulation patterns. This insight shortened sea voyages and increased safety and profits. Maury was inspired by Psalm 8:8, “… and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.”
Maury is remembered for his many scientific contributions, but many do not know he was a lifelong student of the Bible. In a letter to his brother, he said, “keep a watchful eye on your heart” so you are not led to care about the opinions of this world and mar your conscience. He faithfully lived by this precept himself and learned his duties from the Bible.
