But these things did not dismay them … for their desires were set on the ways of God, and to enjoy His ordinances; but they rested on His Providence and knew whom they had believed. William Bradford, Pilgrim Governor, 1656
For the Chain of Christianity to continue it‘s westward progress and eventually produce what are today the American people, intrepid European explorers relied on their faith in God‘s providence. Explorers such as Christopher Columbus and John Cabot in the 15th Century, Sir Francis Drake and Ponce del Leon in the 16th Century were undeterred by the obstacles presented by the crude navigation principles of the day.
Teach the children:
1.God guides and directs those who seek his wisdom.
2. The discoverers of America were wise enough to ask God for direction in their voyages. Their discernment wasn’t always perfect – Columbus believed he had landed in the Far East – but they persevered and shrugged off discouragement.
3. We sometimes need to be as brave as these explorers.
Daniel answered, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever! For wisdom and might are His! He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding! Daniel 2:20-21
