The Providence of God in War: Preserving the Nation

by | Discerning Moment

“It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we would grow too fond of it.” General Robert E. Lee

War is a terrible thing, but it is sometimes necessary and justified by Scripture. War brings out the best and the worst in people.

Throughout history, God has preserved our nation, sometimes averting war, sometimes giving us the strength to fight wars victoriously. Only in recent times have we come to denigrate soldiers and dishonor our military. We must honor them if we expect future generations to rise to our nation’s defense.

We must be wary of entangling alliances and global conflicts, but we must also recognize that we need allies in the world and we need to be faithful to them.

PRINCIPLES:

1. Scripture and Christian theology authorize just warfare.

2. A strong defense deters aggression and thus preserves peace.

3. We should be well-wishers to liberty everywhere but the guardians only of our own.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. Matthew 24:6 KJV
