Til we come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God…
Ephesians 4:13
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1
Christianity produces civil or political union in a different way than the world does. It produces union based upon spiritual unity. The colonies were all very different, composed of many nations, religions, customs, manners and habits. They previously had little communication, so to unite them in the same principles seemed impossible. However, after the Boston Port Bill was enforced, within two months, for the first time in Christian history, three million people achieved Biblical Christian Unity. The colonies found themselves united both in the cause of Liberty and in the unity of spirit.

What is the cement of American Union
- Unity in Christ: the Pilgrims derived their ideas of Christian Unity from the New Testament churches.
“Individuals and families, drawn toward each other by their common trust in Jesus Christ….became a community united, not by external bonds, but by the vital force of distinctive ideas and principles.” - Unity with diversity: Beneath the diversity of the colonies was that unity of spirit which united them. For 150 years they had been practicing the principles of Christian Self-Government. They knew their rights and liberties were of God, not of man, and they were united in this conviction.
