This painting depicts a somber scene of the Continental Army’s difficult journey to their winter encampment, with Commander Washington on horseback observing his struggling troops. The encampment was from December 19, 1777, through June 1778. It has become an iconic and historically significant representation of the sacrifices made during the Revolutionary War.
