Helping You in Your Role as a Parent
“Children are a gift of the Lord,” (Psalm 127:3) Scripture tells us, a gift that brings enormous fulfillment and joy, but one that requires a significant investment of our time, effort, love, and patience. We are commanded to “bring [our children] up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4): in other words, to discipline them, teach them, model to them, and love them in such a way that they learn to love God above all else, to trust Him, and obey Him. We are to equip them, first and foremost, to love God and serve Him humbly and honorably all the days of their lives. Secondly, we must provide for them: in their practical, immediate needs as well as their future and emotional or spiritual needs.
Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language has this to say about the role of parents in their children’s lives:
EDUCATION:
The bringing up, as of a child; instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and for the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.
The mission of the Foundation for American Christian Education is to help you form Christian character in your children in order to preserve liberty. The liberty that we have inherited from our Christian forbears will only survive if her citizens are virtuous and wise. A poignant quote attributed to John Adams on June 21, 1776 states:
Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free Constitution is pure virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our People in a greater Measure than they have it now, they may change their rulers and the forms of government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty. They will only exchange Tyrants and tyrannies.
In pursuit of virtuous citizens (and therefore liberty), the Foundation has rediscovered America’s Christian history and the methodology used by America’s founding generation that produced such extraordinary individuals and statesmen—brilliant, but prudent; devoted to God, filled with purpose, and courageous in the pursuit of that purpose, but humble. Called the Principle Approach®, this educational philosophy and method not only produces outstanding academic results, but also builds a firm Biblical worldview in its students. Principle Approach education aims to build character in the student, to teach and enable the student to reason Biblically, and to celebrate the individuality of each child and encourage excellence in every area. The Foundation partners with schools, homeschools, families, churches, statesmen, and ordinary citizens to transform the mind and heart of our nation one person at a time.
